Why the app is rated 13+
What the app is
A private space for a single community. Someone creates it and invites members; there is no public feed, no global search, and no way to discover strangers.
Every community is separate. Content posted in one is never visible in another.
Automated screening
Every post, comment and direct message is screened automatically when it is created, across harassment, hate, violence, sexual content, self-harm and spam.
Content flagged by that screening is hidden and raised to the people who run the community.
People can act, too
- Report any post, comment or profile
- Block anyone, from the post menu or their profile. The people who run the community are told
- Hide individual posts you would rather not see
- Community owners and moderators can remove content and members
Agreeing to the rules
Everyone accepts the Terms of Service before signing in. They prohibit harassment, hate speech, sexual content involving minors, and content that is illegal where the member lives.
Accounts that break them lose access.
What the app does not do
- No advertising. There are no ads and no ad networks in the app.
- No tracking. Nothing is shared with third parties to follow members across apps or websites, and the app carries no advertising identifier.
- No in-app purchases. The app sells nothing to members.
- No open web browsing. There is no browser inside the app; links open in Safari.
- No public exposure. Nothing a member posts is visible outside their community.
Child safety standards
Own Your Pixel prohibits child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) in every community, without exception. That includes child sexual abuse material (CSAM), grooming, sextortion, trafficking, and any content that sexualizes a minor. The Terms of Service forbid it, and everyone accepts them before signing in.
- Reporting. Anyone can report a post, comment or profile from inside the app, or write to hello@ownyourpixel.com with "Child safety" in the subject.
- What we do. When we find or are told about CSAE, we remove the content, remove the account, and report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline, and to the relevant authorities.
- The law. We comply with the child safety laws that apply to us, and we cooperate with law enforcement.
- Child safety contact. Martin Escalante, founder, hello@ownyourpixel.com.
Leaving, and taking your data
Any member can download their data or delete their account from inside the app, under Profile → ⋯ → Privacy. Deletion is scheduled 30 days out and can be cancelled by signing back in; after that it is permanent.
Questions about safety, or something to report that the in-app tools do not cover? Write to hello@ownyourpixel.com and a person will answer.
